REVISION

      REVISION
        OF THE
UNPACKING QUOTATION

“ The fact is I am getting a little afraid of John.
He seems very queer sometimes, and even Jennie has an inexplicable look.
It strikes me occasionally, just as a scientific hypothesis,—that perhaps it is the paper!I have watched John when he did not know I was looking, and come into the room suddenly on the most innocent excuses, and I've caught him several times LOOKING AT THE WALLPAPER! And Jennie too. I caught Jennie with her hand on it once.”
The above was quoted from “ The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Stetson, the story convey the tale of a woman who is the narrator in the story suffering from a mental disorder. In the story the narrator shows how her illness constantly shift her way of thinking toward John and Jennie regarding the mystery of the yellow wallpaper. She thinks that they concealed the truth hidden by the wallpaper and that revives a sensation of dreadfulness toward the closest person. The narrator said “the fact is i'm getting a little afraid of john” in this event she thinks that she is getting better because of the conscious feeling that she obtains by noticing the expression of people around her. She starts to built doubts about people helping her which is the result of her illness. Again the narrator is thinking that she is getting better by doing a divergent interpretation that won’t take her anywhere close to wellness.
The narrator mentioned “I caught John” this phrase gives the reader the impression that the narrator is finally has found herself and she is well healthy and mindful woman. However she also mentioned “i caught Jennie” which also emphasize the same idea that she is noticing something that gives the sense of healing from the illness. Whereas she state that she captured them “LOOKING AT THE WALLPAPER!” which to me it should not be an issue because it is natural for any human to gaze at either a lavish or rubbish picture. But by her saying that she really augments her mental illness by creating negativity in her mind toward caregivers. .
The narrator imagination is full with naive thinking that she refuses reality by trying not to accept her illness. However part of the cure is to accept your illness and not let your thought get over you and destroy your ability to be well. Here the narrator is always looking for a reason such as expression to built negativity like “ He seems very queer sometimes” which mean that he look suspicious. Well its natural for him to even look worse than suspicious because of all the trepidation that was told be her about that wallpaper and for him as her psychiatrist logically its naturally that he stare at the wallpaper.
However; It is true that sometimes we may not say the truth but our expression may let it out and also how you say things absolutely matter. Here the narrator is taking the expression of people dealing with them to solve what she thinks is a mystery. Therefore the symptoms of the mental illness could be the misinterpretation of people expression. She also mentions “ Jennie has an inexplicable look” here another family member and a caregiver as well but she describe her as a hazy person who is unclear to figure the truth from. The narrator place all these assumption about her husband and doctor in the same time and Jannie the sister of John and never pause for a second to say that it might be her who is mentally ill or at least is not thinking right.
Overall we have to keep in account that the narrator is putting effort to prove that the person who had given her so much love was only faking all those beautiful moment. Moreover the narrator is taking a cruel step by considering people close to her as haters and they don’t want her to see the truth.  It’s hard to live with mental illness because it commands you to team up against your lovers and it makes your family struggle in handling your illness. However there is a statement that describe the mystery of the illness by Andy Behrman "I prayed for a broken bone that would heal in six weeks. But that never happened. I was cursed with an illness that nobody could see and nobody knew much about" .

LARGEST LAND MAMMAL

ELEPHANTS

Elephant is the immense land mammal that still  exist till this day with strong relation to human. A huge bull of the African elephant may weight 6 tons with height exceeding 13 feet  as it indicated by a specimen at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.. However female elephant has the height of eight feet which is much smaller than the male elephant. Despite their bulk body elephants can completely move and make no noise. Elephants normally walk in the rate of 4 miles per hour and the speed up to 25 miles per hour for a short distance. Female elephants have the privilege to lead the herd. Elephant trunk is the most conspicuous part in the body that has no bones despite it strength and multi-function. The elephant trunk is  long flexible, muscular and sensitive tube that aid the elephant to find food, pick up objects and give themselves water baths. Elephant trunk could  lift 770 pounds, snorkel underwater and has a great sensibility that is four times greater than a bloodhound’s. Moreover elephants have large ears that could detect sound as low as 14 Hz (Human lowest range 20 Hz) but they have small eyes with a poor vision.

It is astonishingly amazing how the largest animal walking on earth bears beautiful personalities and has no danger to human. Elephants appears to be extremely intelligent and emotional. Therefore Elephants use many different sound level to communicate with the herd and they could use level that is below human range of hearing. Their emotion is obvious they express their happiness and joy when they around their loved ones and when the have their newborn baby is the most exciting moment for elephants. Elephants reunion is very emotional occasion as well, they show their respect and welcoming there formerly absent family member with celebration. However that is the happiness side but elephants also have heartbreaking moment where they get very sad. There are moment where they cry because of sheer frustration such as  if a member of their herd is incurably ill or if there is a natural or human disasters. Elephants have another side of emotion which is caring. For example if they see a wounded members of the herd they rescue them and they also rescue human from any danger of other elephant or natural disaster. Moreover elephant remember and mourn their beloved even after long time of their death.

Lets always bear in mind  the elephant and it is great influence on human. Human in many societies  use elephant to initiate and thrive the power to reach achievement in life. Elephants persist as symbol of power, loyalty eternity, respect, patience and stability even in places where it had become extinct. Elephants in many cultures stand for a religion symbol of deities to show wisdom and strength. Elephant has been a great tool to help human in their daily needs such as lifting heavy logs and other object where there is no access for machinery to do it. Moreover if elephants is seeing  in your dream, it means that you will be able to deal with any obstacles face in life.

Elephant the Animal and Its Ivory in African Culture

Doran H. Ross
Page 65
African Arts, Vol. 25, No. 4, 100th Issue (Oct., 1992), pp. 64-81+107-108

"As the largest land animal on the planet, the elephant is a potent symbol of the animal kingdom, distinguished by its size, prehensile trunk, ivory tusks, and enormous ears. In the West, where the elephant is an exotic creature known only from books, movies, circuses, and zoos, its image suffers  distortion and even exploitation. Whether romanticized or trivialized, the elephant is rarely presented in its complex reality. But in Africa, where humans and elephants-or their respective ancestors-have coexisted for a million years or more, the elephant is known in fuller dimensions. It has been a source of food, material, and riches; a fearsome rival for resources; and a highly visible, provocative neighbor. Inevitably it has had an impact upon the artistic imagination. Even in areas where the elephant has now vanished, it persists as a symbol in expressive culture."

Ode to the Elephant
Translated from the Spanish byllan Stavan

Thick, pristine beast, Saint Elephant, sacred animal of perennial forests, sheer strength, fine and balanced leather of global saddle-makers, compact, satin-finished ivory, serene like the moon's flesh, with minuscule eyes to see - and not be seen - and a singing trunk, a blowing horn, hose of the creature rejoicing in its own freshness, shaking machine and forest telephone, the elephant passes by, tranquil, parading his ancient facade, his costume made of wrinkled trees, his pants falling down, and his teeny tail.

She starts to built doubts about people helping her which is the result of her illness. Again the narrator is thinking that she is getting better be drawing a perverted path that won’t take her anywhere close to wellness.
Through all the story the “ I” in this stage is the well healthy and mindfulness woman that determine the right from wrong by herself. Whereas she follows with the word “ caught” which shows that there is also a conflict that she notice and it gives her a sense of healing from the mental illness. Therefore the accusation or conflict was “LOOKING AT THE WALLPAPER!” which to me is not a conflict and by her saying that she really augments her illness be creating negativity in her mind toward caregivers. A simple mind could have a better understanding that if there is a drawing people might take a look at it or even though people always look at drawing even if is’t good.
The narrator imagination is full with naive thinking that she refuses reality by trying not to accept her illness. However part of the cure is to accept your illness and not let your thought get over you and destroy your ability to be well. Finally at last i want to say, It’s hard to live with mental illness and hard for people to deal with it because it commands you to team up against your lovers.

the yellow wallpaper

by  Charlotte Perkins Stetson

1.  Is this a ghost story?

In the passage "The Yellow Wallpaper" Charlotte Perkins Stetson brought up the story of her mental illness while she is a wife of a psychiatrist and also his patience. The story carries on some scary moment with some mysteries of the wallpaper which is a consequence of her illness that lead her way of thinking. I think it is not a ghost story but a normal mental disorder that makes her frightening of the  normal surrounding . According to her husband and brother who she said that they are "physician of high standing" describe her illness as " temporary nervous depression - a slight hysterical tendency". Therefore the story is more about malfunction in her way of organizing and interpreting facts. However that result in isolation of herself from realty to the  imaginary world that lives only in her mind.
